About Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), also known as Ayushman Bharat, is the world's largest government-funded health insurance scheme. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23, 2018, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, this flagship scheme aims to provide universal health coverage to India's economically vulnerable population.

The scheme provides free health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to over 50 crore beneficiaries from more than 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families identified through the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011.

PMJAY is a centrally sponsored scheme with funding shared between the Central and State governments in a 60:40 ratio for most states and 90:10 for North-Eastern states and Himalayan states. The scheme is implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
